'ZDNET Recommends': What exactly does it mean?

ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing.

When you click through from our site to a retailer and buy a product or service, we may earn affiliate commissions. This helps support our work, but does not affect what we cover or how, and it does not affect the price you pay. Neither ZDNET nor the author are compensated for these independent reviews. Indeed, we follow strict guidelines that ensure our editorial content is never influenced by advertisers.

ZDNET's editorial team writes on behalf of you, our reader. Our goal is to deliver the most accurate information and the most knowledgeable advice possible in order to help you make smarter buying decisions on tech gear and a wide array of products and services. Our editors thoroughly review and fact-check every article to ensure that our content meets the highest standards. Father's Day 2025 is this weekend and finding the perfect gift for your dad isn't always easy. While it may seem like there's an endless number of outlets recommending tool kits, socks, and wallets for dad, at ZDNET, we take the tech approach to everything -- including our gift-giving. Plus, with celebrations just a few days out, plenty of these picks can be scooped up via Amazon with fast Prime delivery.

Also: I've tested hundreds of DIY gadgets. These are the 10 every dad should have

We've rounded up some of the best Father's Day tech gadgets your dad can keep loving every day of the year. These picks will upgrade his day-to-day activities from basic to so much better. Plus, we've tested all of these products ourselves before recommending them to you. These editor-approved picks will surely wow and make the perfect accompaniment for the incoming deluge of dad jokes.

If your dad is a fitness fanatic who enjoys purposefully designed tech, he'll likely be impressed with the new Whoop 5.0 band.

The Whoop 5.0 is the newest release since the Whoop 4.0, and it's a standout among fitness trackers because of its unique design -- a band without a screen. While Whoop is mainly considered a health tracker used by pro athletes and fitness enthusiasts, the release of the new wearables caters to a more general, health-minded customer base willing to pay a high price for cutting-edge health tech.

In September 2023, Whoop unveiled Whoop Coach, a GPT-4-supported conversational chatbot that can deliver personalized recommendations and fitness coaching based on the user's data. The addition of Whoop Coach is an attempt to expand the device's target audience, giving everyone, regardless of athletic experience, the ability to understand their biometric data and take steps toward improving their health.

ZDNET's health wearables expert Nina Raemont tested the Whoop 5.0 band in May, and says she is impressed with its functions. "The new health bands track your sleep, activity, and recovery like the rest of the health trackers on the market. However, the bands also deliver innovative new features, like a blood pressure monitor that provides data right from your wrist, an ECG monitor that detects atrial fibrillation, and clinician-reviewed reports for blood testing and vitals monitoring," Raemont says.

If dad spends time working from home, a functional upgrade makes a great gift. An ergonomic lap desk is a great way to level up Dad's setup and might be something he wouldn't think to ask for.

Also: I work from home - this lapdesk turned my couch into my office (and I can't go back)

Nerdytec's Couchmaster comes in several iterations, some in varying colors and others offering more features like USB hubs, lighting, and limited-edition designs. It's primarily advertised as a gaming lap desk, ideal for gaming on the couch, but the Cyworx, which offers the most basic package of features, is also great for people who work from home, children, college students, and more.

Here's the basic breakdown: The Couchmaster Cyworx is a wood desktop on top of two memory foam blocks covered with a removable textile upper (great for accidental spills). The wood board isn't fixed to anything, to allow for custom positioning every time, and it comes with plenty of intentional accessories. I love my Couchmaster for writing sessions on the sofa, and it's proved to be a great companion for reading, streaming, and more.

Anker's EverFrost 2 cooler is a battery-powered cooler that reliably stores perishables for up to three days without ice. It's perfect if Dad needs the smartest way to keep his favorite snacks and drinks cool in the summer heat.

Also: I tested a smart cooler and can never go back to toting ice

Smart device expert Maria Diaz says it cools down super quick, dropping from room temperature to freezing in under 15 minutes during her testing.

"The Anker Solix EverFrost 2 is a perfect electric cooler to safely keep drinks and food cold while camping, especially if you bring accompanying solar panels to recharge its battery," Diaz says. "However, it can also become a convenient smart device for so much more. You could leave it in your trunk during road trips or tailgating or use it to keep drinks and food cool at a park or during your next backyard cookout."

Multitools are a classic dad item, and if you're looking to gift one, our expert Adrian Kingsley-Hughes says he's impressed with this affordable option from Amazon Basics, and he's tested plenty of them.

Also: I expected this cheap multitool to be a waste of money, but it's my new a toolbox essential

At under $20, Kingsley-Hughes says this multitool offers an impressive array of features, including combination needle nose and regular pliers, a wire cutter, a locking knife, a saw, both slotted and Phillips screwdrivers, and a convenient carabiner for easy carrying. Keep in mind that due to the saw, this may not comply with laws in some jurisdictions and countries, and because of this you won't be able to take this multitool through TSA.

Hughes says the function is perfect and the price is right, and for under $20, he doesn't care if it goes missing.

If your dad has tried every wallet under the sun to no avail, consider gifting our pick for the best AirTag wallet, the Titan X Tirfold, a modern spin on a classic Father's Day gift. This slim RFID-blocking wallet is designed to hold up to 10 cards plush cash.

Also: Finally, a Ridge wallet alternative that's similar in functionality but cheaper in price

The Titan X offers durability and functionality while providing top-notch security and smart capabilities. Although it is a bit pricey, it's still cheaper than the popular Ridge wallet, and is even a smidge more advanced in features. And all things considered, a quality, traditional wallet could quickly run you over the $100 mark, too, which makes this long-term investment worth it, in my opinion.

Also: The best AirTag wallets you can buy

A few years back I gifted my dad a Ridge wallet, and while it stood the test of time, he's had to replace the metal plates once and the screws holding them in place twice. Plus, the instant he saw the Titan X wallet during my testing, he jumped ship completely. He loves the lever that makes it easy to dispense his cards and the internal pockets.

Is your dad king of the grill? With grilling season here, now's a great time to upgrade Dad's essential cooking kit. The Meater 2 Plus is an intelligent precision thermometer designed to confirm the temperature of tons of various meat ideally.

Also: My favorite smart kitchen tool just got a meaty upgrade

ZDNET's Sabrina Ortiz has gifted the Meater 2 Plus to several friends, and owns one herself, too. "It's so good, I use it nearly every day ... the game-changing part is that it alerts you when [the meat] is done," Ortiz said.

ZDNET's Matthew Miller is a Meater fan, too. After owning the original Meater, he reviewed the Meater 2 Plus back in February. "The Meater 2 Plus enhances the cooking experience with more sensors, an upgraded design, and a reliable thermometer that can be counted on to provide accurate and timely temperature management ...  if reliable and safe cooking is what you're after, and you don't trust eyeballing or timing things, then this smart thermometer is well worth the investment," Miller says.

If your dad is one to lose his essentials often, consider gifting him a way always to find them. Specifically, his wallet. The Chipolo Card Point is a Bluetooth tracker designed to easily fit into any traditional wallet and provide quick tracking capabilities.

Also: I found a Bluetooth tracker for Android people that functions better than AirTags (and it's cheaper)

Chipolo also offers a Bluetooth tracking tag. ZDNET expert Adrian Kingsley-Hughes says it's especially great for Android people, and that it functions better than AirTags. The best part? It's cheaper than AirTags, too.

Help Dad keep track of his keys, wallet, and more, even if he doesn't have an iPhone.

If Dad needs a few more ZZZs, look no further than Ozlo. The Ozlo Sleepbuds are developed by ex-Bose engineers and are ZDNET sleep tech expert Nina Raemont's pick for best overall sleep earbuds right now. She says these buds are the best, most comfortable sleep earbuds she's tried to date.

"My bedroom overlooks a bustling Brooklyn street that is always polluted with noise, like police sirens, screaming ambulances, neighbors singing and celebrating into the wee hours of the night, and pedestrians yelling at each other. These earbuds simplified my descent into sleep -- I put these earbuds in and couldn't hear a song or chatter outside my window," Raemont says in her review.

Also: I tried the viral sleep earbuds developed by ex Bose engineers - and they felt like a dream

With the app, you can also customize sleep sounds with up to 10 to choose from, set up an alarm in the earbuds, and put a timer on the earbuds for them to shut down after you've gone to bed. Some features, like sleep tracking, will also be coming soon in an over-the-air app upgrade. Raemont says these buds are the most comfortable, too.

The earbuds were so good that Ozlo was awarded a Best of CES award in the wellness category, as selected by ZDNET, CNET, PCMag, Mashable, and Lifehacker.

The Sony X90L is one of our favorite 2023 TVs and among the most underrated TVs on the market. It doesn't blow you away on the spec sheet, but the real-world performance and usability make it one of the best buys on the market. It's technically in the same category as the popular TCL QM8 and Hisense U8K.

Also: The Sony Bravia is the best TV you've never heard of: Here's why you may want to buy one

However, while those are Mini-LED TVs and look like they should be better on paper, the Sony X90L has better color accuracy, plenty of brightness, and a higher quality remote than TCL and Hisense. With this TV, you get Sony's excellent picture processing to upscale content to 4K. If you're looking for a TV to watch movies, this one nearly rivals expensive OLED and high-end QLED TVs that cost almost twice as much.

Expert Adrian Kingsley-Hughes never travels without this Bluetooth passport holder from Satechi, which is a great gift option for any Dad who loves to explore. As we know, there's nothing more intense than a Dad at the airport.

If your Dad is the sporty and fitness type but doesn't want to integrate a smartwatch into his everyday look, a smart ring, like the newest Oura Ring Gen 4, might be the perfect gift. The Oura Ring's design mimics a premium, luxury jewelry option, available in several finishes to match your preference. Several ZDNET team members use the Oura Ring daily, including smart ring expert Nina Raemont and senior editor Allison Murray.

Yes, our trusty smartphone cameras do a nice job, but expert Ant Pruitt says there's nothing like a true camera body for capturing great family moments in the highest image quality. Pruitt tested the Nikon Z50 II, and he says the camera has the potential to be a great way to elevate one's photography from a smartphone. Plus, it might even be better than some of your options from Sony and Canon.

If Dad is a slow coffee sipper and a hot beverage enthusiast who often ends up having to sip on less-than-ideal lukewarm coffee, the Ember Tumbler seeks to end all hot beverage problems. It can hold 16 ounces of any beverage of choice and can be controlled from a smart app. Plus, it's perfect for taking on the go.

This Bosch electric screwdriver is expert tinkerer Adrian Kingsley-Hughes's go-to tool for weekend fixes, and you can't go wrong gifting it to your favorite handy Dad.

If Dad always needs to boost his phone, smartwatch, or earbuds (or wants to curb all the cords), this compact,  travel-friendly charging setup is it. Statik's travel charger combines a 10,000mAh MagSafe charger, portable charger, and wall charger. Plus, it features a built in lightning and USB-C cable and additional outlets, and works in over 150 countires thaks to three included travel adapters.
